Orioles’ Chen talks baseball, culture and work ethic in visit to Towson High

Towson High Principal Jane Barranger said after the event that the interaction was good for the students, even if they were a bit shy.

More interactions like that really help with self confidence in the long run, she said. Even if you attempt and try to learn a language of a country, it really is perceived positively.

Isis Wang, a sophomore at Towson University and recently-elected president of the universitys Chinese Culture Appreciation club, enjoyed the event for different reasons.

She was born in Taiwan, and was refreshed to hear her native tongue spoken in America. She used to speak a similar dialect, but after moving to America, had to change and speak traditional...

The Chronicles of Narnia: A Loveable Yawn-Fest

I admit it. I struggle with The Chronicles of Narnia. I know they are supposed to be enchanting stories that speak of deeper realities, but all I find are shallow narratives that leave my imagination in lurch. I want to believe in Narnia; I want to believe in Aslan – yet, CS Lewis does a poor job of making either believable.

My latest journey into Narnia was through The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. In Voyage, we find the Pevensies once again in Narnia, but not alone. They are accompanied by their priggish cousin, Eustace. The threesome find themselves thrust onto the deck of the Dawn Treader in mid-voyage. King Caspian is sailing the far seas in search...

Political enjoyment in Malaysia: From RPK to Bersih — Alwyn Lau

MAY 7 Bersih 3.0 had a lot of Baru (new) in it. Among other things it was no longer a march; it was a sit-in occupation of a symbolic venue.

It wasnt dominated by one ethnic group or class but included many new communities: the middle-classes, religious groups, many more Chinese and even some children joined. Some would say, surely correctly, that Bersih 3.0 was more 1 Malaysian than 1 Malaysia.

Another important element of Bersih is how it signals a new era in Malaysian socio-political activism. A new kind of civil mentality. Given the excitement and passion surrounding April 28, it may be easy to forget that less than half a decade ago, the biggest and most enjoyable political...

Psychology Study: For Enjoyment, Slow Down

People rush through experiences not necessarily because they lack self-control but because they simply dont realize that slowing down consumption leads to more pleasure, a study finds.

The researchers proved this hypothesis using several different stimuli, including Hersheys Kisses and video games. For the Hersheys Kisses, test subjects were told theyd be eating a half-dozen candies, and they either got to pick the interval between morsels (from 10 seconds to 200 seconds) or had one assigned to them (200 seconds). Given a choice, people opted for 93-second intervals, on average, a pace more than twice as fast as the other group.

The people who ate the Kisses more quickly not only...

U.S. adults worry less, enjoy life more

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) — US adults are worrying less and enjoying life more, and are less stressed since the recession began in 2008, a survey indicates.

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Indexs Emotional Health Index score is based on Americans self-reporting of positive and negative daily emotions, as well as self-reported clinical diagnoses of depression.

Gallup and Healthways began tracking daily emotions in January 2008.

The US Emotional Health Index score was 79.9 last month, slightly above the previous high of 79.8 recorded in March 2008 and May 2010.
